A product description is sales writing that explains what a product is and how it will benefit you. The purpose of a product description is to explain the key features of a product and compel a customer to buy it.
What is the difference between a product description and a product listing?
The product description is the copy that entices the shopper to purchase the product by explaining why it’s worth buying. It includes the features and benefits of a product and any problems it solves. On the other hand, a product listing is a webpage showing the product details such as the title, price, images, description, etc.
Where do online shops get product descriptions from?
If you plan to sell your products online on marketplaces such as Amazon or Etsy, you must provide your own product descriptions. It’s a good idea to get a copywriter or product description writer to create descriptions for your product – if you don’t want to do it yourself.
How do you start a product description?
Research your target audience; get into their heads and figure out their wants, desires, needs and struggles. This information will help you find ways to present your product as a solution to their problem.
Use sensory words to paint a picture and make potential customers imagine the scene, and evoke a particular feeling in them. Use social proof if you have it; this builds trust.
The product description should be easy to read with short paragraphs, bulleted points, subheadings, and bold, or italicized fonts.
What are some describing words?
Describing words or sensory words are words that describe how we experience the world, such as how we taste, smell, hear, see or feel something. Why are sensory words so effective? Our brains process sensory words faster than ordinary words.
Here are a few examples of sensory words: cringeworthy, booming, screeching, rambling, itchy, scalding, flowery, pungent and fruity.
Even sprinkling in one or two sensory words can make your copy go from boring to striking. Sensory words paint a picture and draw readers in. However, don’t go overboard with tons of exaggerated words. This might confuse readers and distract them from the main point of the product description.
Also, think of your target audience and their reading level as well as the words that would resonate with them.
What to include in a product description:
- Target audience
- Details/specs
- Benefits
- When is it best used?
- What makes it unique?
- SEO Keywords
Here’s how to fill in the information using a day planner as an example:
- Target audience: high school/college girls who like to be organized and need to stick to a schedule, they want to be more productive
- Details:100 pages/50 sheets notebook, custom day planner pages with mood tracker, step count, water intake, weather, gratitude, meals, notes, goals, to-do list, deadlines, date and day.
- When is it best used? This wholesome day planner is perfect for you if you’re preparing for exams and you’re juggling between studying and part-time jobs
- What makes it unique? You can keep track of your food breaks and water intake
- Keywords: productivity, cute day planner
Here is a formula for describing the USP of your product:
[Product] helps [Audience] with/who [Problem] achieve/get [Benefit] through [Unique solution]
