Pinterest board descriptions are like very tiny sales pages. You’re basically selling your brand or board and you want people who land on your board to take action.
You want users to take a step and follow you, go to your link-in-bio, or your website. In order for them to take that step they should know what they’re gonna get by following you.
Later I’ll show you a few  examples of Pinterest board descriptions to give you some inspiration for your next board.
What are Pinterest board descriptions?
Pinterest board descriptions explain what that particular board is about. Board descriptions are short, contain 3-5 relevant keywords, and tell Pinterest users to follow your account for more content.
Having great Pinterest board descriptions will allow your pins to get found on Pinterest as well as in Google search results. Resulting in more clicks, views, email signups, and sales.
How to create board descriptions in Pinterest
You are allowed a maximum of 500 characters in your board description, which is plenty. All you need to do is include the topics the board covers, what results the user will achieve from this content, and tell users to follow you.
Create subtopics from your main topics.
Pinterest boards are usually created around subtopics. For example; if one of the topics you’re interested in is ‘Hair loss over 40’. A few subtopics [which relate to ‘Hair loss over 40’] could be:
- ‘menopausal hair loss’
- ‘hormonal hair loss’
- ‘hair loss supplements’
- ‘hair loss shampoo’
- ‘how to hide hair loss’
…you get the drift. So each board focuses on a specific section (subtopic) of the whole topic.
How to get keywords for your board description
What are keywords
Keywords are terms users type in when searching for something on Pinterest. Keywords tell Pinterest exactly what your boards and pins are about so Pinterest will know when to display it in search.
Include 3-5 keywords in your board description: You can add them in a sentence or put a few at the end of the description with hashtags or the pipe element i.e.
- #hair loss supplements # hair growth in older women
- hair loss supplements|hair growth in older women
If people are interested in this topic they would follow this board. You wouldn’t want people who are not interested to follow you otherwise they won’t interact with your content and your engagement rate will decrease.
How to find keywords on Pinterest
I show you in detail how to find Pinterest keywords in this blog post. But here I’ll go over the quickest way to find keywords for free.
Head over to the Pinterest ads planner. Type in a word relevant to your niche, for example, ‘Hair loss’, now the keyword planner will spit out a list of keywords related to ‘Hair loss’.
Copy the keywords you want to use onto a Google sheet and then group related keywords together to form clusters.
The clusters should make sense to you and be relevant…the keywords below are grouped because they relate to each other:
- Hair loss tips for women
- Natural hair growth tips
- Hair loss remedies
The keywords above are all potential board names so now we have to go deeper and find keywords for each of the keywords above.

Now we’ll find keywords for the board description
Take a keyword you want to use, put it in the keyword planner and see what comes up. Next, copy 3-5 relevant keywords and paste them into your Google sheet under the main keyword.
Sometimes you won’t find anything in the ads keyword planner. If that happens, put the main keyword in the Pinterest search bar, and look at the colorful tiles that come up, put those keywords in your sheet.
Now you have your board name [main keyword] and your low competition keywords [3-5 keywords].
Why are keywords important if Pinterest is all about visuals? We [as humans] are able to look at a pin and can tell what it’s about but the Pinterest algorithm cannot. That’s why we use the board and pin descriptions to tell Pinterest what our content is about so that it’ll make our pins appear high in the search results.
Pinterest Board descriptions can include:
- your brand name
- main keywords (3-5)
- who this is for
- why they should follow you

How to get your pins to perform better on Pinterest
This is something I learnt recently. When you upload a pin to a board on Pinterest, the Pinterest algorithm takes into account the information in the board title and description and adds it to the pin.
So, if your new pin is uploaded to a board that’s very popular, your new pin will get a boost. You can then repin your new pin to the most relevant boards from there.
I hope you found this article on Pinterest board descriptions helpful. Do you have any tips on how to make pins go viral?
