FAQs
How Do I Start a Copywriting Portfolio?
Choose your niche and decide on what type of copy you want to create. Blog posts are best for beginners, but you could go for sales pages, ads, video scripts, and more.Â
You only need 2-3 writing samples for your portfolio. If you are doing blog posts then publish them on Medium but for other types of copy, it can be in a Google doc.
Next, create your free portfolio on Journo Portfolio or create a professional freelance writer website.
What are Spec Pieces In Copywriting?
Working on spec means that you’re doing the copywriting for free – maybe as a test piece for a company you want to write for – without a guarantee of payment or publication.
You can even create copy for a made-up product or brand to use as a sample in your portfolio, so you can land your first writing job. This is to show potential clients that you can write for their niche and audience.Â
I’ve created a few SPEC pieces, like this landing page copy [below] for a sleep tracker app I made up.Â

This is how I create my copy for a SPEC ad from scratch:
- First, choose a product or brand in your niche.
- Find a few ads related to the product or service.
- Rewrite a few of the ads exactly as it is and then in your own words.
- Open up a Google doc and write a new ad for an imaginary product/service similar to what you’ve been rewriting.
- Include power words and persuasive copy
- Edit your ad in 24 hours

How Do I Find Clients for Copywriting?
Find your ideal clients on LinkedIn and reach out to them by sending a connection request or cold email.
Attend virtual or in-person events that cater to your ideal clients.
Network with other freelancers. Many freelancers refer clients to each other, especially when they have too much work.
You can also ask for referrals from past or existing clients, this is more likely to turn into paid work because the referrals also serve as a testimonial because clients will only refer you if you worked well with them.
How Much Do Copywriting Clients Pay?
It depends on the type of copywriting you do for the client. If you’re doing sales page copy, most clients are willing to pay a few thousand dollars.
Your freelance writing rates are dependent on your skills and experience, but new writers with less than 2 years of experience charge between $50–$80 per hour.Â
So if you’re a complete beginner charging $50/hour and take three hours to write a blog post you’ll make $150 for that project. If you know the time it’ll take to write a blog post you can charge per project instead of per hour.
